Overview of Four Ball Testing Machine:

The four ball friction testing machine is used to study the EP and wear tests of oils, lubricants, and oils. The same tester can be used for several standard tests, such as ASTM D2266、D4172、ASTM D2596、ASTM D2783、BS EN ISO 20623、BS ISO 26422、CEC L-45-A-99、DIN 51 350、IP 23。 It always measures inline torque, temperature, downforce, total wear, and acoustic emissions. Currently used by multiple Fortune 500 companies.

Module information:

The four ball testing machine is used to study anti-wear additives for extreme pressure EP, friction coefficient, load wear index, ball joints, lubricating grease, oil, and additives.

Wear prevention test - This test is used to evaluate the lubrication performance of lubricating grease or oil. The experiment is conducted under relatively mild test conditions, such as at 75 ℃, 1200rpm, 392N, for 1 hour. Tests with higher loads and longer durations can also be designed. Evaluate the performance of lubricants by measuring and comparing the wear diameter of the balls after testing. Measure the diameter of the wear scar on each of the three lower balls at two positions that are 90 degrees apart from each other. Report the average of 6 measurements as the wear diameter for the 4 ball test. The four ball testing machines provide highly reproducible results during wear testing, as the downforce is precisely controlled in real-time.

Extreme Pressure EP Test -4 Ball EP Test is used to test the lubrication performance of lubricating oil (oil and grease) under extreme pressure conditions. The top ball rotates at high speed and high load for a short period of time, such as 1800 RPM, 3000 N, and 30 seconds. The load gradually increases or linearly increases until the lubricant fails. The load that can be applied is up to 12000 N. The fault depends on the welding of the four balls, with visible instantaneous increases in smoke, friction, or torque. The test automatically stops at the beginning of the fault. The rating of lubricants is based on their ability to "pass" tests without failure when subjected to loading. The 4-ball tester can provide high repeatability results and accurately maintain force during the testing process.

Data example:

Figure 1 shows the results of the increased load test. The test is configured to automatically apply a linearly increasing load from 400N to 4000N at a rate of 600N/minute. Acoustic signals are also recorded. It indicates that the sample begins to fail around 2800N, while * failure causing welding is observed around 3600N. The illustration in the figure shows the lower ball welded after a failure occurred during the extreme pressure test. During the testing process, the friction coefficient is measured in real-time and recorded with high accuracy.

Figure 2 shows the 3D image of the ball after conducting a 4-hour ball wear test at 1200rpm and 392N, revealing the size or scar of one of the spinning balls. The 3D image was created using Rtec Universal Profilometer. The surface photometer displays the volume wear and scar diameter or the rotating or stationary balls generated by various testing methods.
