Overview of Friction Testing of Ring Block Testing Machine
Ring block testing machineThe blocks on the ring tester help determine the friction coefficient, wear, friction, wear rate, volumetric wear, and wear resistance of EP, lubricants, greases, bearings, rings, shafts, etc. This test can operate under a wide range of loads, sliding speeds, rotational speeds, and temperatures.
Module Function

Wear test - This method involves determining the friction and wear characteristics of lubricating grease or oil in the application of sliding blocks on a ring testing machine. According to application and testing requirements, the sample can be immersed in water, or the lubricant can be circulated at a controlled flow rate using a pump or grease distributor. By defining temperature (up to 500 ℃), loading rate, test load (up to 10000N), and speed (up to 5000 rpm), testing can be easily configured. The rotating shaft is supported from both ends to prevent bending under high loads.
EP testing - This method involves determining the extreme pressure performance of lubricating oil or grease in sliding applications. The testing conditions typically involve increasing the load in step or linear mode until failure or sudden increase in friction coefficient occurs during the testing period. This method is commonly used for oil and lubricant testing by Timken Company (ASTM D2509 and ASTM D2782). Evaluate the wear of the sample to determine the qualified/unqualified criteria for the lubricant under the test load.
Customized testing - blockage on the setting of the circular wear testing machine is a highly used test in the petroleum industry. The multifunctional block on the Rtec ring wear testing machine allows for the execution of many customized tests, such as oscillation tests, where the ring oscillates clockwise and counterclockwise to a predetermined angle or rotation number. These tests are frequently conducted to evaluate the performance of solid lubricants, coatings, or surface textures on bearings and in applications where there are frequent changes in direction or limited movement between two corresponding components. The customizable nature of the blocks on the annular module allows for the installation of actual components including shafts, power transmission components, tapered roller bearings, thrust bearings, and their corresponding parts without requiring too much modification.
Data sample
This figure shows a comparison of different lubricants tested using a block on a ring module on a standard test block HRC30 at a constant load (1500N) and a speed of 200 ℃ (1500rpm) compared to Timken rings.

The MFT-5000 block on the ring module is an ideal choice for running tests in block mode. By precise temperature control and monitoring, loads up to 10000N can be applied. By adjusting the volume and flow rate of the lubricant, loading rate, applied load, rotation speed, and testing temperature, multiple ASTM and customized tests can be conducted on the same platform. Multiple customized tests can also be performed on the module, including testing actual components. This module can be used to characterize the frictional properties of additives, oils, fats, coatings, solid lubricants, bearings, shafts, etc.
