1、 Selection criteria

The device integrates protection, measurement, metering, and control, and can replace various additional components such as traditional thermal relays, leakage protectors, undervoltage protectors, time relays, intermediate relays, current transformers, instruments, control switches, indicator lights, programmable controllers, transmitters, etc. There are many factors related to the selection of motor protectors, such as installation location, power supply situation, and coordination with the distribution system; It is also necessary to consider whether to configure protection for newly purchased motors, upgrade motor protection, or improve protection for accident motors; We also need to consider the difficulty of changing the motor protection method and its impact on production; The selection and adjustment of protectors should be comprehensively considered based on the actual working conditions on site.

3、 Common problems with mining motor protectors

1. Electric motors are more prone to burning out windings

Due to the continuous development of insulation technology, the design of motors requires both increased output and reduced volume, resulting in a decreasing thermal capacity and weaker overload capacity of new motors; Due to the improvement of production automation, it is required that electric motors operate frequently in various ways such as starting, braking, forward and reverse rotation, and load variation, which puts higher demands on motor protection devices.

In addition, electric motors have a wider range of applications and often work in extremely harsh environments such as humidity, high temperature, high dust, corrosion, and so on. In addition, there are irregularities in the construction of electric motors and oversights in equipment management. All of these factors have made electric motors more prone to damage than in the past, especially with regards to the frequency of faults such as overload, short circuit, phase loss, and sweeping.

2. Principles for selecting motor protectors

The purpose of selecting an electric motor protection device is to enable the motor to fully utilize its overload capacity, avoid damage, and improve the reliability and production continuity of the electric drive system.

When meeting the protection requirements, the protection device should be considered first. When simple protection devices cannot meet the requirements, or when higher requirements are placed on the protection function and characteristics, complex protection devices should be considered to achieve the unity of economy and reliability.

The specific selection of functions should be based on a comprehensive consideration of factors such as the value of the motor itself, load conditions, environmental conditions, the importance of the motor, and whether the shutdown will have a serious impact on the production system, striving to achieve economic rationality.

3. Ideal motor protector

The ideal motor protector is not the most functional, nor is it supposed to be, but rather it should be. So what is practicality? Practicality should meet the requirements of reliability, economy, convenience, and have a high performance price ratio. So what is reliability? Reliability should first meet the reliability of functions, such as overcurrent and phase failure functions, which must be able to reliably operate in various situations, processes, and ways of overcurrent and phase failure.

4、 Classification of motor faults

For electric motors, their fault forms can be divided into two aspects from a mechanical perspective: winding damage and bearing damage. The main reasons for winding damage are:

(1) Under long-term electrical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical reactions, the insulation of the winding ages and is damaged, resulting in inter turn short circuits or ground short circuits in the stator and rotor windings.

(2) Poor power supply quality in the power grid, unbalanced three-phase power supply voltage, large voltage fluctuations, distorted power grid voltage waveforms, severe harmonic distortion in the design of high-order microcontroller based motor protectors, or motor phase failure operation.

(3) The low power supply voltage results in insufficient starting torque for the motor, causing it to fail to start smoothly or repeat starting in a short period of time. Prolonged exposure to excessive starting current can cause the motor to overheat.
