The salicylic acid spectrophotometric method is used to determine the presence of ammonia nitrogen in the form of free ammonia or ammonium ions in a mixture of water sample and masking agent. In an alkaline environment and in the presence of sensitizers, the ammonia nitrogen reacts with salicylate ions and hypochlorous acid ions to form a colored complex. The monitor detects the color change and converts it into ammonia nitrogen value output.
