ICES Incubator

Photosynthesis is a crucial marine process that can generate organic matter. The ability to measure this process is crucial when studying marine plankton systems. In practice, the most sensitive means of measuring this process is to measure the absorption of carbon dioxide. This highly sensitive carbon dioxide absorption measurement method allows for use in any environment, including low or high concentration seaweed environments, under low light and low temperature conditions.

Based on the carbon-14 measurement method and utilizing the absorption of radioactive isotope carbon-14, the primary productivity incubator is an ICES standard incubator used for measuring the primary productivity of phytoplankton. The development of the primary productivity incubator shown in the figure is mainly for monitoring purposes. This incubator is the first choice for analyzing water samples obtained from a mixed water layer with a constant temperature. To calculate primary productivity, vertical water attenuation data is also required. The amount of phytoplankton based on chlorophyll-a concentration also needs to be measured to interpret the results.

The primary productivity incubator consists of a transparent resin glass tank equipped with lighting tubes and a rotating wheel that can accommodate 12 experimental bottles. The tank is filled with water, which is in a flowing state through a circulating water pump. Therefore, the rotating wheel carries 12 experimental bottles and rotates at a speed of 10rpm. The sink is also connected to a second water circulation device, which regulates the water temperature in the sink through an external temperature controller.

12 experimental bottles with a volume of 50ml, each with a different optical cover, therefore each bottle has a different transmittance, resulting in 12 different levels of light intensity. The lighting unit is equipped with 10 fluorescent tubes, which are customized according to the spectrum specified by ICES, and each can be individually controlled with a switch. If the experiment requires high light intensity, we can install an additional lighting unit on the ICES incubator according to your requirements.
