How to maintain and upkeep a sewage pump
Date: 2025-09-22Read: 22
As an important equipment for treating sewage and wastewater, the maintenance of sewage pumps is directly related to operational efficiency, service life, and safety. The following is a detailed guide for the maintenance of sewage pumps, covering daily inspections, regular maintenance, fault prevention, and safe operation

1、 Daily inspection and maintenance

  1. Running status monitoring
    • Sound and vibrationDuring operation, listen carefully for any abnormal noise from the pump body (such as metal friction or impact sounds) and ensure even vibration. Abnormalities may indicate impeller wear, bearing damage, or debris in the pump body.
    • Current and voltageUse an ammeter to monitor the motor current. If it exceeds the rated value by more than 10%, overload may occur due to impeller blockage or motor failure.
    • Flow and pressureObserve whether the flow rate at the outlet is stable and whether the pressure gauge reading is within the normal range. The sudden drop in flow may be due to inlet blockage or impeller wear.
  2. leak test
    • mechanical sealCheck for leaks at the sealing area. Minor leaks can be resolved by adjusting the spring pressure or replacing the seal; Serious leakage requires shutdown for maintenance.
    • shaft sealIf packing sealing is used, adjust the gland bolts regularly and maintain a small amount of water dripping (about 10-20 drops/minute) for lubrication and cooling.
  3. Liquid level and medium
    • level controlEnsure that the pump operates above a low liquid level to avoid seal damage or motor burnout caused by idling.
    • medium characteristicsCheck the content of solid particles and fibrous substances in the sewage. If it exceeds the pump's capacity, a grille or filter should be installed.

2、 Regular maintenance project

  1. Lubrication and maintenance
    • Bearing lubricationAccording to the pump type (such as rolling bearings or sliding bearings), regularly add lubricating grease or oil according to the instructions. For example, a rolling bearing should be lubricated with lithium based grease every 2000 hours of operation.
    • motor bearingCheck the temperature of the motor bearings. If it exceeds 80 ℃, stop the machine for inspection and replenish lubricating grease.
  2. Replacement of vulnerable parts
    • impellerCheck the wear of the impeller every six months. If the clearance between the impeller and the ring exceeds the standard value (usually 0.5-1mm), the impeller or ring needs to be replaced.
    • mechanical sealReplace the mechanical seal once a year. If the medium is highly corrosive, the replacement cycle should be shortened.
    • cableCheck if the cable sheath is damaged and if the joints are loose to avoid the risk of electrical leakage.
  3. Pump body cleaning
    • internal cleaningDisassemble the pump body every quarter, remove mud and debris from the impeller and pump casing to prevent blockage and corrosion.
    • cooling water systemIf the pump adopts water cooling method, check whether the cooling water pipe is unobstructed and whether the water pressure is stable.
  4. Electrical system inspection
    • grounding protectionConfirm that the motor grounding wire is firmly connected and the grounding resistance is ≤ 4 Ω.
    • insulation testUse a megohmmeter to measure the insulation resistance of the motor winding to ground. If it is lower than 0.5M Ω, dry or replace the motor.

3、 Seasonal maintenance

  1. Winter protection
    • antifreeze measuresWhen not in use, drain the accumulated water in the pump to prevent the pump body from freezing and cracking; If the ambient temperature is below 0 ℃, antifreeze should be added or the pump body should be kept running at low temperature.
    • Insulation treatmentWrap insulation materials around pipes and pump bodies exposed outdoors to reduce heat loss.
  2. Summer protection
    • Thermal managementClean the dust on the motor heat sink to ensure good ventilation; If the ambient temperature is too high, a forced ventilation device can be installed.
    • Moisture proof treatmentCheck the sealing of the control cabinet to prevent humid air from entering and causing short circuits in electrical components.

4、 Fault prevention and handling

  1. Common faults and solutions
    • The pump is not producing water
      • Check if the inlet valve is open and if the impeller is blocked.
      • Confirm if the motor direction is correct (reversing will result in no flow).
    • insufficient traffic
      • Clean the inlet filter and adjust the clearance between the impeller and the pump casing.
      • Check if the voltage is stable to avoid a decrease in speed caused by low voltage.
    • Motor overheating
      • Check if the load is too large and if the bearings are short of oil.
      • Confirm if the ventilation opening is blocked and if the ambient temperature is too high.
    • Sealing leakage
      • Tighten the sealing gland bolts and replace worn seals.
      • If the leakage is caused by the bending of the shaft, it needs to be straightened or replaced.
  2. Emergency response process
    • Immediately press the emergency stop button when serious leaks, abnormal vibrations, or motor smoke are detected.
    • Close the inlet and outlet valves, cut off the power supply, and hang a warning sign reading 'Do not close'.
    • Record the fault phenomenon and contact professional maintenance personnel to investigate the cause.

5、 Safety operation standards

  1. personal protection
    • Wear protective gloves and goggles during maintenance to prevent sewage from splashing into the eyes or skin from coming into contact with corrosive media.
    • When working in a humid environment, use insulated tools and wear insulated shoes.
  2. Operation taboos
    • It is strictly prohibited to dismantle pipelines or clean impellers while the pump is running.
    • Avoid using hard objects to strike the pump body to prevent deformation or damage to the seal.
    • Do not change the motor wiring method arbitrarily to prevent reverse or overload.

6、 Long term shutdown maintenance

  1. Pre processing before discontinuation
    • Drain the accumulated water in the pump and rinse the pump body and pipes with clean water.
    • Apply rust proof oil to metal parts to prevent rusting.
  2. Regularly start
    • Run without load for 10-15 minutes every month to prevent bearing rust and motor moisture.
    • Check the sealing after operation to ensure no leakage.

7、 Maintain records and archive management

  1. Establish and maintain a ledger
    • Record the time, content, replaced parts, and maintenance personnel information for each maintenance.
    • Save data on motor insulation testing, bearing temperature monitoring, etc. for easy analysis of equipment status trends.
  2. Spare Parts Management
    • Based on historical fault data, reserve commonly used vulnerable parts such as impellers, seals, and bearings.
    • Regularly check spare parts inventory to avoid expiration or damage.
