The purpose and accuracy of measuring blocks

Measuring block, also known as block gauge. It is the most basic measuring tool for controlling dimensions in the machine manufacturing industry, serving as a medium for transferring dimensions from standard length to parts, and serving as the benchmark for length measurement in technical measurement.

The length measuring block is a rectangular block with a rectangular cross-section made of bearing steel that has good wear resistance, high hardness, and is not easily deformed, as shown in Figure 4-1. It has two measuring surfaces, upper and lower, and four non measuring surfaces. The two measuring surfaces are parallel planes that have been precisely ground and polished to be very flat and shiny.The rectangular cross-sectional dimensions of the measuring block are: for measuring blocks with basic dimensions of 0.5-10mm, their cross-sectional dimensions are 30mm × 9mm; for measuring blocks with basic dimensions greater than 10-1000mm, their cross-sectional dimensions are 35mm × 9mm.

The working size of a gauge block does not refer to the distance between any two measuring surfaces, as the two measuring surfaces are not parallel. Therefore, the working size of a gauge block refers to the center length, which is the vertical distance from the center of one measuring surface of the gauge block to the adhesive surface of the other measuring surface (whose surface mass is equal to the gauge block *). On each measuring block, its working size is marked: when the equivalent block size is equal to or greater than 6mm, the working mark is on the non working surface; When the equivalent block is below 6mm, the working size is directly marked on the measuring surface.

The accuracy of measuring blocks is divided into five precision levels based on the accuracy of their working dimensions (i.e. center length) and the accuracy of the parallelism between the two measuring surfaces, namely level 00, level 0, level 1, level 2, and level (3). The accuracy of level 0 measuring blocks is the highest, and the working dimensions and plane parallelism are made very accurately, with only a few micrometers of error. It is generally only used as a calibration or calibration precision instrument for provincial and municipal measurement units. The accuracy of level 1 measuring blocks is second, and level 2 is even lower. The accuracy of level 3 measuring blocks is the lowest, and they are generally used as measuring blocks in factories or workshop measurement stations to calibrate or verify precision measuring tools commonly used in workshops.

Gauge blocks are precise dimensional standards that are not easy to manufacture. In order to ensure that measuring blocks with slightly larger deviations in working dimensions can still be used as precise length standards, the working dimensions of the measuring blocks can be calibrated more accurately, and the correction value of the measuring block calibration can be added during use. This approach may be cumbersome to use, but it can still serve as a precise standard for dimensions for measuring blocks with slightly larger deviations.

Measuring blocks are very precise measuring tools, and the following points must be noted when using them:

1Before use, wash off the rust proof oil in gasoline first, and then wipe it clean with clean suede or soft silk. Do not use cotton yarn to wipe the working surface of the measuring block, in order to avoid damaging the measuring surface of the measuring block.

2After cleaning, do not take the measuring block directly with your hands. Instead, use a soft silk lining to hold it. If it is necessary to hold the measuring block by hand, the hand should be washed clean and held on the non working surface of the measuring block.

3When placing the measuring block on the workbench, the non working surface of the measuring block should be in contact with the tabletop. Do not place the measuring block on the blueprint, as there are residual chemicals on the surface of the blueprint that can cause the measuring block to rust.

4Do not push the working surface of the measuring block into contact with the non working surface to avoid scratching the measuring surface.

5After using the measuring block, it should be cleaned in gasoline in a timely manner, wiped dry with soft silk, coated with anti rust oil, and placed in a box. If it needs to be used frequently, it can be stored in a drying jar without applying anti rust oil after cleaning. It is not allowed to bond the measuring blocks together for a long time to avoid unnecessary damage caused by metal bonding.
