When the steel ball in the bottle is close to the measuring head on the instrument, the magnetic field on the measuring head attracts the steel ball to the inner wall of the bottle. At this point, the distance between the steel ball and the measuring head is the thickness being measured, which is inversely proportional to the strength of the magnetic field. By measuring the strength of the magnetic field, the relevant thickness can be determined.
